Excellent Advice For Life

John Wooden

No other college basketball coach has done what Coach John Wooden did — win 10 NCAA National Championships in 12 years, including four undefeated seasons.  Coach Wooden was also the first person ever to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach.

Part of his success with his players is a result of his coaching them not only in the game of basketball, but also in the game of life.  He didn’t focus on winning games, but instead urged his players to focus on being the best that they could be.  He told his players that only they would know inside whether they had done the best job they could.

Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do the best of which you are capable.

That’s something each of us can do every day in whatever we undertake.

When John Wooden graduated from grammar school his father gave him a seven point creed by which to live.  I think it’s excellent advice for us all:

  • Be true to yourself.
  • Make each day your masterpiece.
  • Help others.
  • Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.
  • Make friendship a fine art.
  • Build a shelter against a rainy day.
  • Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day.

To your happiness!
